Used vs. New: What to Know

There's no single right answer to new vs. used — it depends on your budget, how you drive, and what you value. Here's an honest breakdown of the trade-offs on both sides.

There’s no universal ‘right’ answer

Anyone who tells you new is always better — or that used is always the smart move — is oversimplifying. The best choice comes down to your budget, how long you plan to keep the vehicle, and how much you value the newest features and full warranty coverage. Because we sell both new Fords and pre-owned vehicles of every make, we can lay out the trade-offs honestly.

The case for buying new

  • Latest technology and safety. Newer driver-assist features, infotainment, and efficiency improvements arrive on new model years first.
  • Full factory warranty. A new Ford comes with complete manufacturer coverage from day one.
  • Current incentives. New vehicles are where you’ll find Ford Canada rebates and promotional financing — we apply eligible offers automatically.
  • Exactly what you want. Pick the trim, colour, and options rather than taking what’s on the lot.

The trade-off: a new vehicle takes the steepest depreciation, losing roughly 20% of its value in the first year.

The case for buying used

  • Lower cost of entry. The same budget goes further — often a nicer trim or a bigger vehicle than you could get new.
  • Someone else took the depreciation. A two- or three-year-old vehicle has already passed its steepest value drop.
  • Plenty of life left. A well-maintained, inspected used vehicle can serve reliably for years.
  • All makes in one place. Compare across brands on our lot, not just Ford.

The trade-off: shorter or no remaining factory warranty, and you’re choosing from what’s available rather than building to order.

A simple way to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. How long will you keep it? If you keep vehicles a long time, used maximizes value. If you like a new vehicle every few years, new (or leasing) may fit better.
  2. How important is the latest tech and full warranty? If those are must-haves, lean new. If reliable transportation at a lower price is the goal, lean used.
  3. What’s your budget — and is a trade-in involved? A trade-in can meaningfully change the math on either side.
